As with any event like this there are a few thing to be aware of that will help everyone stay safe and maximise the enjoyment over the weekend.
Please read through the various sections to and above all show respect for others and work with the HCW volunteers to ensure we all have fun.

Glasses - reusable plastic cups

As part of a drive for sustainability, and to decrease the use of single use plastic for Hope Cove Weekend the Committee have purchased HCW branded clear plastic pint tumblers.  These will be on sale at £1 each throughout HCW at all venues and will be the only means of purchasing a drink in those establishments, where they will be accepted. This will not only reduce the use of single use plastic, but also get rid of the need for those establishments to charge a deposit on their own plastic glasses as in previous years.  They will also be a handy and reusable souvenir of Hope Cove Weekend.

First Aid

There will be trained First Responders provided by Role 1 Medical on site and manning a fully equipped First Aid Post throughout Hope Cove Weekend.

Car parking

Additional Car Parking will be available as usual in the field off the Outer Hope bypass by kind permission of David Rossiter.  Please only use either the main car park or the additional car park to leave access for Emergency services at any time.  Users of the car parks do so at their own risk and the Committee will not accept liability for any accident, damage or loss to passengers or vehicles.

Road closure

HCW have been granted a road closure by DCC during the event. From 17:00 to 01:00 on Fri 24 August; From 09:30 to 01:00 on Sat 25th and Sun 26th August and from 09:00 to 16:30 on Mon 28th August the road through Hope Cove Square to the Lobster Pod Bistro will be closed after the Car Park. Businesses and holiday home owners/holiday makers have been advised of these timings by mail drop. No vehicles will be allowed to go beyond the road closure after 08:45 on any morning to ensure safety. This closure will be strictly enforced by the Organising Committee, and our Security company, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Watersports

Everyone participating in any of the water based activities, except swimming races,  is required to wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid.  Anyone removing life jacket or buoyancy aids during the races shall be disqualified.

Private land

The Shippen (the grassy hill between the two beaches), the grass lawn behind the Post Office and the Fisherman’s hut are all privately owned and only authorised persons are to enter those areas.  The use of the Shippen for the Firework Display is by kind permission of Tamsin Rossiter.

Hospitality

Hope Cove’s hospitality venues, in common with the rest of the UK, Have struggled with staffing throughout the past year.  Please be patient with staff during Hope Cove Weekend, they are working on your behalf and will get round to serving you as soon as they can!

Harbour beach

The rules for Harbour Beach are for the benefit of all users and are very simple:

  • Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times
  • No fires or BBQs are permitted
  • The slipway must be kept clear at all times
  • Leave nothing but footprints behind you!

Adult supervision

All under 18s must be supervised by an appropriate adult. By entering an event you do so at your own risk. The committee will accept no responsibility for any accident, damages or loss.

Disclaimer forms

Disclaimer Forms must be signed as a condition of entry for a number of events.

If you are under 18 a parent/guardian must sign on your behalf.

The Hope Cove Weekend Committee

Chair - Karen

Hi, my name is Karen and I am the Chair for Hope Cove Weekend.

Chair - Sam Kemp

Hi, my name is Sam and I am the Chairman for Hope Cove Weekend. I have been on the committee for 6 years now, although this will be my third event. This year it is our aim to make some more changes to the weekend whilst keeping the same family-fun atmosphere which has attracted families for decades. I am sure you will hear my dulcet tones over the microphone throughout the weekend, especially during my favourite event, Beach Flags.

When I am not volunteering for the event, I am a teacher at a local Primary school in Kingsbridge. I live there with my wife, son, cat and dog (who many of you will know as the harbourmaster's dog, Red). I hope you thoroughly enjoy yourselves and make this the best weekend we have ever had!

Communications - Julie Wells

Stephen and I moved from Buckinghamshire to Hope Cove in February 2021. We have been happy to involve ourselves in village life!
I edit the 'South Huish Parish Newsletter' and Stephen is Treasurer of the Hop Cove Lifeboat.
I also teach pilates and run sessions for Activities 115 in Kingsbridge for adults with learning disabilities..

I am happy to help out on the planning committee for Hope Cove Weekend, including managing our social media and of course running the 'Pilates on the Beach' session on Bank Holiday Monday.

Secretary - Sandra Keith

Hi, I’m Sandra and I’ve been coming to Hope Cove since 1976. I absolutely love Hope Cove Weekend and have thoroughly enjoyed entering various events – either on the beach or running in the joggers race and have encouraged my own family and friends to enter all sorts of competitions which run over the weekend.

I am delighted to be part of the Committee this year and will be found at my sister’s side at the top of the slipway of the harbour beach, or dashing between there and the square outside the pub, with a clipboard in hand a wearing a high viz jacket(!)

Treasurer - Tina Birks

I have been helping out at Hope Cove Weekend for over 10 years now, originally with marshalling, then organising the joggers race and helping with the beach based activities. Last year I joined the committee and organised the Open Water Swim.  This year I have taken on the daunting task of Treasurer.

I love everything about Hope Cove and the weekend showcases what an amazing, close community it has and what wonderful tourists visit every year. It is truly unique. The weekend is based on simple family fun for everyone.

As owner of The Cove we love finishing the season with Hope Cove Weekend.  A fun packed weekend for our regular visitors, locals and amazing team to let their hair down and end the season with a bang.

Beach activities

Christine Luckock

I’m Christine, I’ve been involved in HCW one way or another since 1976 . I was a lively participant  in my younger years  particularly in the Raft Race  and the Fancy Dress. I started assisting my Dad with the Commentary over HCW as a volunteer some years ago then took over to enable him to take a back seat. I’ve been a committee member since 2018 and I’m delighted that HCW is back! To me it’s all about family fun for all. You’ll  generally find me  with a microphone and a clipboard and pen at the top of the slipway down to Harbour Beach.

Mike Best

We bought our place in 2018 and moved in over Hope Cove Weekend, which was an amazing introduction to this unique part of Devon. I volunteered in 2019, helping Christine out with the fancy dress competition and won the photography prize in 2022! It’s become an institution already to our family.

Now that I’ve retired after a career in property, I’m spending more time here so wanted to give something back and jumped at the chance to get involved in the committee. There’s a lot to learn but huge amounts of experience to draw on.

Hi my name is Hannah, I moved to the area back in 2017. I am originally from a coastal town where I farmed sheep & cattle, I work at Pennywell Farm where I am head of the Animal Care Team so I really enjoy the holiday vibe.
